About Us

Over 140,000 horses are shipped to slaughter every year.

Here at Great Escapes Horse Rescue and Sanctuary we strive to help as many horses as possible. Most of our work comes through the purchase or acquisition of horses via kill pens in and around the state of Texas. Many of the horses we rescue still have a lot of good miles left in them. We have also taken in owner surrenders when they could no longer be taken care of and needed a safe place to retire without risk of ending up in the slaughter pipeline.

Overbreeding and irresponsible owners have led to an influx of horses at auctions where many times kill buyers outnumber private buyers. Statistically over 90% of horses are under the age of 9 and healthy.   There are exceptional horses that end up in kill pens simply because they were at the end of an auction.

Many of our horses are registered. Others have solid foundations and have been used in ranching, showing, trail riding and playdays. Some are even "bomb proof." We love our babies and yearlings here at Great Escapes, with our goal to train and break them at the appropriate time so that they are able to be adopted out to good homes. Others are a little past their prime and in their senior years but still want and get all the love as residents of our sanctuary. We are only able to maximize the number of horses we help through donations, volunteers, and coordination with other rescues with similar missions.
